How to enter the Portuguese market (FPF)
ProSportStaff · 2026-08-28

FPF / UEFA licences, what Portuguese clubs expect, language and hiring calendar — plus how to position for PT jobs.
Portugal is an intense development market — from Liga Portugal academies to Liga 2, Campeonato de Portugal and amateur networks. The FPF runs coach education aligned with UEFA. You need a recognised licence (or equivalency), usable Portuguese and a profile clubs can verify quickly.
FPF / UEFA ladder
Courses map to UEFA C, B, A and Pro. Clubs look at UEFA level plus documented seasons. Always check official FPF calendars before enrolling.
Typical role requirements
- UEFA C — children’s groups, football schools, amateur assistant roles
- UEFA B — competitive youth head coach; Campeonato de Portugal / regional academies
- UEFA A — semi-pro and demanding academies
- UEFA Pro — senior professional head-coach posts
Equivalency from abroad
A UEFA licence from another association is not automatic in Portugal. Expect a recognition file, possible complementary modules, and months of lead time before you move.
Language and club culture
- Portuguese B1–B2 practical floor for youth work; English helps in some pro rooms but Portuguese opens more doors
- Local references and short documented placements matter
- Clear session plans and collaboration with medical/performance staff
Hiring calendar
Peak staff hiring is May–July before pré-época. Winter brings occasional replacements after coaching changes.
