RFEF licences: how to become a coach in Spain

Spain is a dense coaching market: LaLiga academies, Primera/Segunda Federación clubs, private football schools and thousands of amateur sides. Without a clear RFEF pathway licence — or valid equivalency — your CV rarely clears the first filter. This guide covers the ladder, where courses run, and how to position yourself on ProSportStaff for ES-market jobs.

RFEF vs UEFA — same ladder, Spanish delivery

Spain aligns coach education with UEFA standards. You will hear UEFA C / B / A / Pro and local título wording. Clubs look at the UEFA level on the certificate. Courses usually run through autonomous federations under RFEF — calendars and fees vary by community.

What clubs typically require

1. UEFA C — entry: children’s groups, football schools, amateur assistant work
2. UEFA B — head coach for competitive youth; many roles in Tercera Federación / regional academies
3. UEFA A — staff and head roles in semi-pro and elite academy environments
4. UEFA Pro — senior professional head-coach roles

Beyond the certificate

• Spanish B1–B2 practical minimum; academies often prefer stronger
• Medical fitness requirements for enrolment
• Non-EU: residence/work rights separate from the licence
• Safeguarding / background checks when working with minors

Equivalency from another UEFA association

A UEFA licence from another country is not automatically valid in Spain. RFEF or the regional federation reviews your file — partial credit or extra modules are common. Start the process before you relocate.

Where coaches work

• Club academies (cantera)
• Primera / Segunda Federación and Tercera
• Private schools and summer campuses
• Assistant, analyst and goalkeeper-coach roles

Hiring calendar

Peak staff hiring is May–August before pre-season. January brings occasional replacements. Finish a winter course? Use spring for outreach.
