What to do with your first pro paycheck

ProSportStaff · 2026-08-27

Emergency fund before the car. First steps before you spend.

Congratulations on your first professional contract. Now the hard part: don’t confuse the first paycheck with financial independence. Here are 10 things to know before you spend.

1. Gross salary is not spendable cash

Tax, agent fees, rent, travel, insurance and contract gaps reduce your real income. Decide on what remains after obligations — not on the contract headline.

2. Emergency fund before lifestyle

Healthy order: emergency fund → toxic debt → professional costs → investing → then lifestyle. An expensive car can wait. A few months of essential costs protect you through injury or unpaid months.

3. Contracts can end earlier than you think

Injury, coaching changes or early termination can cut income. Independence means covering living costs for months without a contract — not looking good on paper.

4. Read the whole package

  • Signing and performance bonuses
  • Housing, transport, car, medical cover
  • Image rights and exclusivity
  • Contract length and termination clauses
  • Who pays the agent fee

5. Understand the agent fee

What percentage, when it is paid, who pays, what services you get. A good agent is worth paying — but you must know what you sign and how it hits cashflow.

6. Don’t sign sponsorships for a big number alone

Exclusivity, social-media duties and tax can cost more than the short-term fee. Read an image deal as carefully as a club contract.

7. Tax rules change when you play abroad

This guide is not personalised tax advice. Before an international contract, speak to a qualified tax adviser. Residence and reporting mistakes can be expensive.

8. Give every euro a job

A simple budget (living costs, savings, emergency fund, family, lifestyle) beats “I spend what’s left”. If money has no job, lifestyle will hire it.

9. Family and friends — clear limits

Helping family can be a good choice. It should not mean your financial collapse. Decide in advance what you can give monthly — before pressure arrives.

10. Think about life after sport

Careers are short. Build early: savings, education, skills and a professional network. The first paycheck starts a plan — it is not an invitation to max consumption.
