Your contract is more than salary

ProSportStaff · 2026-08-27

Bonuses, benefits, image rights, termination — read the whole package.

€5,000 plus benefits can be worth more than €6,000 without them. Compare packages, not only the salary on page one.

What else is in the package

  • Signing bonus
  • Performance bonuses and match fees
  • Housing, transport, car
  • Insurance and medical treatment
  • Image rights
  • Contract length and termination clauses
  • Who pays the agent fee

Benefits have real value

If the club covers rent and medical insurance, you save money you would otherwise pay from net income. That raises real income without raising the headline salary.

A way to think

Offer A: €6,000, no housing. Offer B: €5,200 + paid housing + insurance. Price monthly rent and insurance — then compare again.

Clauses worth reading twice

  1. Termination conditions and what remains payable
  2. Bonuses: when they trigger and when they don’t
  3. Exclusivity on image / sponsorships
  4. Rules on loan or transfer
  5. Medical and availability obligations

Common mistakes

  • Signing for a “big salary” without reading annexes
  • Ignoring who pays tax on bonuses
  • Accepting image exclusivity without knowing what you lose
  • Not checking what happens in a long injury

The lesson

A contract is a system of cashflow, rights and risks. Read it like a game plan — not like a headline.
