Where do you pay tax when you play abroad?
ProSportStaff · 2026-08-27

Simple principles + when to ask a qualified tax adviser.
This article explains general principles. It is not personalised tax advice. Situations differ by country, contract type and residence — for your case, ask a qualified tax adviser.
Why it is complex for athletes
You may live in one country, play in another, receive bonuses from a third and run sponsorships online. Each income stream can follow different rules. That is why “where do I pay?” has no single internet answer.
Basic principles (educational)
- Tax residence — where you are treated as resident for tax
- Country where you work / play — income from local activity
- Local contract — how salary is structured and who withholds tax
- Sponsorship and image income — may be treated separately
- Treaties between countries — can limit double taxation, but not “automatically”
Clarify before you sign
- Where will I be tax resident during the contract?
- Who withholds salary tax — the club or me?
- How are bonuses and image rights treated?
- Do I still have reporting duties in my home country?
- Who helps with filings if I move mid-season?
Signs you need a specialist now
- International contract or country move
- Income from multiple sources (club + brands)
- Residence change during the season
- Offers with confusing “net” vs “gross” structures
The key message
Before you sign an international contract, speak to a qualified tax adviser. An advice fee is almost always cheaper than a reporting mistake.
Education helps you ask good questions. A specialist helps apply answers to your situation.
